Diwali (also called Divali in other countries) or Deepavali is popularly known as the festival of lights.The word Diwali has been derived from Deepavali which in turn is formed by dipa + avali (row). It is an important five-day festival in Hinduism, Sikhism and Jainism, occurring between mid-October and mid-November.
The first day of Diwali is called Dhanvantari Triodasi or Dhanwantari Triodasi also called Dhan Theras.
The second day of Diwali is called Narak Chaturdasi. It is the fourteenth lunar day (thithi) of the dark forthnight of the month of Kartik and the eve of Diwali. On this day Lord Krishna destroyed the demon Narakasur and made the world free from fear.
The third day of Diwali is the actual Diwali. This is the day when worship for Mother Lakshmi is performed.
On the fourth day of Diwali, Goverdhan Pooja is performed.
The fifth day of the diwali is called Bhratri Dooj. It is a day dedicated to sisters.
For most of the hindus/Indians and working class, this is the biggest festival and the day when they want to be with their families and perform the prayers together in their homes.
Deepavali is a line or a row of lamps. Peoples celebrates Diwali or Deepavali with new dresses, sweets and crackers. Crackers are the important one for the everyone in India for that Diwali festival.In Hinduism, Deepavali marks the return of Lord Rama to his kingdom of Ayodhya after defeating Ravana, the ruler of Lanka, in the epic Ramayana.
