Several trains link it to important cities like Delhi, Jaipur, Mumbai and Jodhpur.

Introduction

The Camel Festival is organized in the month of January every year by the Department of Tourism, Art & Culture, Rajasthan. It is held in the city of Bikaner, with the magnificent Junagarh Fort forming as its backdrop. The festival is organized to underline the value of camel, the indispensable ship of the desert. Bikaner Camel Festival commences with a splendid as well as colorful procession of camels, festooned and ornamented. The procession then moves ahead to the Polo grounds, where it finally concludes.
Bikaner, the fortified city of Rajasthan, bedazzles in the month of January as each year the magnificent fest glorifies the golden sands.

Activities
The festival starts with the procession of beautifully decorated camels. The procession heads towards the open sand grounds. Here, the festivities begin in earnest. The Camel Pageant is held on the first day wherein the camel owners show off their Camels' decorations and jewellery. Camel dance performances are also held. A competition for best decorated camel, fur cutting design, camel milking and the best camel hair cut is organized The camels display amazing footwork, dancing gracefully to the slightest direction of their drivers. Colourful bridles, bejewelled necks, jingling anklets and long, lanky camel shadows on dusky sands, cast a magical spell.

In this festival tea and sweets prepared by camel milk are made available to the visitors interested in enjoying them.

History
Situated in the heart of the desert belt, Bikaner was always an inaccessible land. Before the advent of modern motor vehicles, the survival of the people of this region depended on the 'Ship of the desert' - the Camel. The camels of this region were famous for their endurance as well as their strength and beauty.

In fact, the Bikaner army had an elite camel corps called the Ganga Risala which took active part in both the World Wars. The Ganga Risala was a Camel unit in the army even after the independence and it took part in Indo-Pak wars. Bikaner also boasts of the only Camel breeding center in India.

Camel can still be seen pulling heavy loads on carts in this region. With such a long association with Camels, it is but natural that the Department of Tourism, Art and Culture chose to hold the Camel festival in Bikaner.

Marwadi Wedding - Pre-wedding, Wedding & Post Wedding Rituals, Facts & Traditions

Marwadi Wedding is a traditional and elaborate affair. Pre and post wedding ceremonies stretch for days where tradition and customs take precedence over everything else.
Marwari weddings are celebrated with pomp and splendor. With all the ornaments and lavish clothes, the Marwari weddings are an extravagant affair. Marwari Wedding Rituals are an integral part of the Wedding and are done in a traditional way. The different Marwari Wedding Rituals can be divided as Pre Wedding Ritual, Wedding Rituals and Post Wedding rituals.

Pre-wedding Rituals:

  • Engagement Ceremony
  • Ganapati Sthapna & Griha Shanti Ceremony
  • Pithi Dastoor
  • Mehfils
  • Mahira Dastoor Custom
  • Janev
  • Palla Dastoor
  • Toran

Marwari Wedding Rituals :

Granthi-Bandhan
In the granthi bandhan, the cloth tied to the waistline of the groom is opened and one of its ends is tied to the chunni of the bride. This is symbolic of the union of two individuals into oneness.

Paanigrahan
The granthi bandhan is followed by the 'paanigrahan' ceremony, wherein the grrom takes the hand of the bride in his hand. The union of two hands symbolizes that the two would be together in both the good and bad times.

Pheras
In the mandap, while the purohit recites the mantras, the bride and the grrom circle around the sacred fire. Mostly, only four 'pheras' are circled in the mandap while the rest three were performed right after the var mala. Traditionally, in the first two pheras, the girl leads and in the next two pheras, the boy leads.

Ashwahrohan
In this ceremony, the bride puts her foot over the grinding stone to symbolize her courage to face all the challenges of life. Thereafter, the brother of the bride puts some 'kheel' or puffed rice in the bride's hand, which are passed to the groom's hand and then offered to the fire. This ritual symbolizes the brother's wishes for prosperity for his sister and her husband.

Vamang-Sthapana and Sindurdaan
During all the earlier performed rites, the bride sits on the right side of the groom. In the 'vamang-sthpana' ceremony, she changes position and sits on the left side of the groom. This is symbolical and states that the groom accepts his bride and establishes her in his heart (since the heart is on the left side of the body). Thereafter, sindurdaan ceremony is performed, wherein the groom fills the bride's centre hair parting with sindoor or vermillion. Sindoor is one of the most propitious signs of the Marwari married woman.

Saptapadi
Lastly, the saptapadi or the seven steps are taken, which signify their togetherness and oneness from now on. Simultaneously, the bride and the groom speak seven sentences, which are in fact promises, they make regarding their conduct towards each other. Thereafter, 'sargunthi' or adorning of the bride's hair is performed, which indicate the acceptance of bride by the groom's family.

Aanjhala Bharaai
In the 'aanjhala bharai' tradition, the father in law of the bride puts a bag full of money in the lap of the bride to signify her future responsibilities and errands. Thereafter, the family blesses the new couple for their future life.

Marwari Post Wedding Rituals

  • Bidai Ceremony
  • Bar Rukai Ritual
  • Grihapravesh Custom
  • Pagelagni Tradition

Chhath or Dala Chhath Pooja - Worship Of Sun God, Introduction, Rituals of the festival, Dates & important days, Benifits of Chhat & traditional video

Chhath is an ancient Hindu festival dedicated to Surya, the Hindu Sun God, Surya, also known as Surya Shashti.Chhat Puja, or Dala Chhath Pooja, is an important ritual observed after Diwali in Bihar and other parts of northern and eastern India. The Chhath Puja is performed in order to thank Surya for sustaining life on earth and to request the granting of certain wishes. The Sun, considered the god of energy and of the life-force, is worshiped during the Chhath fesival to promote well-being, prosperity and progress. In Hindu mythology, Sun worship is believed to help cure a variety of diseases, including leprosy, and helps ensure the longevity and prosperity of family members, friends, and elders.

The rituals of the festival are rigorous and are observed over a period of four days. They include holy bathing, fasting and abstaining from drinking water (Vratta), standing in water for long periods of time, and offering prashad (prayer offerings) and aragh to the setting and rising sun.

Date of the festival

Chhath puja is performed on Kartik Shukala Shashti, which is the sixth day of the month of Kartik in the Hindu Calendar, exactly 6 days after Deepawali. This falls typically in the month of October or November in the Gregorian Calendar.
It is also celebrated in the summer (March–April), on Chaitra Shashti, some days after Holi; this event is called Chaiti Chhath.[6] The former is more popular because winter is the usual festive season in North India, and Chhath, being an arduous observance, requiring the worshipers to fast without water for more than 24 hours, is tougher to undertake in the Indian winters

Days Of Chhat

The first day of Chhat is known as Nahai Khai. Devotees take bath in River Ganges – a symbolic act of purification. Houses are thoroughly cleaned and people prepare for the intense austerity. Vegetarian food is preferred during the period of vrat.

The second day is known as Kharna. Fast or Upvaas begins on the second day and this is referred as Kharna. The fast is broken after performing a puja at home in the evening. Kheer, sweets and fruits are offered to deities and then the whole family shares the prasad. Another round of fasting begins after the prasad is shared. This fast is usually broken on the fourth day morning.

The Third day is spent preparing the prasad (offerings) at home. On the eve of this day, the entire household accompanies the parvaitins to a riverbank, pond or a common large water body to make the offerings (Aragh) to the setting sun. It is during this phase of Chhath Puja that the devotees offer prayers to the setting sun.In the evening pujas are performed at home and a special puja is done for Agni – fire god. This puja is performed in a special area cordoned off by four sugarcane sticks.

The fourth day morning, devotees repeat the rituals performed on the third day evening for rising sun and this is known as Chhat Sooryodaya Argh. What is left after offering to the Sun God is shared as prasad and the Chhat Puja comes to an end.

Benefits of Chhath Puja

  • The Chhath practice improves the immunity of the Vratti’s body.
  • Antiseptic effect: Safe radiation of sunlight can help cure fungal and bacterial infections of the skin.
  • Raktavardhak (increase in fighting power of blood): As a consequence of the practice of Chhath, the energy infused in the blood stream improves the performance of white blood cells.
  • The solar energy has a great influence on the glands, which results in balanced secretion of hormones.
  • Energy requirements are met by the solar energy directly. This will further detoxify the body.
  • A state of creative calmness will prevails in the mind.
  • To a great extent, all negative responses have their origin in the disturbed flow of prana. With the pranic flow regularized, the duration and frequency of occurrences of anger, jealousy, and other negative emotions will be reduced.
  • With patient and sincere practice, the psychic powers like intuition, healing, and telepathy awaken. This depends on the concentration with which the practice is undertaken.
